Environmental Sustainability Report

Fayetteville State University
(FSU) is a
comprehensive university offering degree programs at the baccalaureate,
masters, and doctoral levels. Instructional
programs are organized under the schools of Business and Economics and the
College of Arts and Sciences. In
addition to on-campus instruction, Fayetteville State University provides
undergraduate instruction in the education center at nearby Fort Bragg and
Pope Air Force Bases. Established
as Howard School in 1867, FSU is one of North Carolina’s premier
historically Black institutions of higher learning. Fayetteville State University merged into the University of North
Carolina in 1972.
Fayetteville State University recently began its
involvement with the North Carolina state government’s Environmental
Sustainability Initiative. Plans
for action include:
- Assemble committee of
people to help with the campus-wide environmental sustainability programs.
- Initiate campus-wide
recycling program for aluminum cans, paper products and printer cartridges.
- Conduct Waste
Assessment of the amount of material going from FSU to the landfill. Establish plan to reduce that amount.
- Continue program of
removing underground fuel oil storage tanks not in use.
- Continue to expand
Computerized Energy Management Systems into more buildings and add lighting to
loads that are switched.
- Work with the
Purchasing Department to establish a “buy recycled” program and monitor
its success.
The Environmental Sustainability Officer leading this
effort for FSU is Allen R. (Ray) Williams
at (336) 334-7992.
