North Carolina Department of Revenue
Environmental Sustainability Report

The N.C. Department of Revenue
will expand its use of the data capture
capability, and
we will increase efforts to have taxpayers file electronically. The department has
initiated an active and aggressive e-commerce effort to improve these
capabilities.
- The Department of Revenue has implemented its Data Capture Project that allows for electronic data storage and will eliminate the need for storage of large volumes of paper.
- The Department of Revenue continues to have tax forms on the Internet and encourages filing them electronically which reduced the use of paper and the need for storage space. There were 1,044,368 tax forms filed electronically to date for the 2000 tax year. The electronic filing period is from January 15 to October 15, so this figure should increase. The electronic filing reduces incoming mail volumes, paper to be stored and eventually destroyed which reduces costs.
