North Carolina Department of Correction
The Department of Correction has long been a leader among state government
agencies in environmental projects. Environmental sustainability is a priority among DOC leaders. This is evidenced by the development of a broad policy statement supporting environmental objectives, as well as the development and continuation of specific projects that protect and preserve our state's natural resources. A policy outlining clear goals and objectives for department offices, including incentives for participation, will be completed by the end of 2000.
DOC continues to look for ways that it can improve its internal operations, as well as examine the possibilities of partnering with other agencies and private industry to initiate projects that promote environmental sustainability. For example, the department currently partners with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and the Department of Administration for the production of bluebird nest boxes from old shipping pallets and the Department of Transportation in reclaiming highway signs.

Correctional Institution for Women, construction material that is suitable for fill material for subsequent project phases was stored on site, saving disposal fees, as well as saving money for purchase of fill material later.
