Project Description: Correction Enterprises will close two hog lagoons that were constructed in the 1960s. The wastewater will be applied to a soybean crop in the Spring of 2000. The lagoons will be closed in compliance with Division of Water Quality and Pender County Soil and Conservation Service regulations. Following closure of the lagoons, the Pender County Parks and Recreation Department will use the freshwater ponds as part of a recreation area.

Action Necessary for Implementation: In consultation with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, determine proper procedures to close the lagoons. Determine agronomic rates for the soil types and remove liquids to determine solids content. Solids will be removed by a contractor and disposed of in accordance with DENR regulations. DENR officials will inspect site to document that it is closed appropriately.

Anticipated Environmental Sustainability Benefits: Protection of the surface water and ground water resources to safeguard public health. Also, the residents of Pender County will gain a recreation facility.
