YEAR 2000 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY PLANS

Tool Repair Program at the Caswell Correctional Center

Agency: Caswell Correctional Center

Title: Tool Repair Program

Projected Initiation and Completion Dates: Ongoing

Contact: J. Haynes, Superintendent, Caswell Correctional Center, (336) 694-4531.

Project Description: In cooperation with the N.C. Department of Transportation and Piedmont Community College, inmates at Caswell Correctional Center repair electrical and pneumatic tools rather than have the tools replaced at taxpayer expense.

Inmates complete a five- to six-month training program and receive a certificate from Piedmont Community College for their participation in the course. Tools in need of repair are sent to Caswell where inmates, under the supervision of community college and security staff, repair them for reuse. During 1999, 27 inmates completed the program. For calendar year 1999, cost savings are estimated at $63,875.

Action Necessary for Implementation: Renovate building to accommodate work/study tables; create production area with necessary hand tool kits and technical diagnostic equipment; establish parts inventory; secure instructors from community college; hire program supervisor.

Anticipated Environmental Sustainability Benefits: Enhances environmental sustainability by reusing items that traditionally have been thrown away and placed in landfills.
