YEAR 2000 ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY PLANS

Project 1

Project Title:    Hot Water Weed Control

Agency: NC National Guard

Projected Initiation & Completion Dates:  Equipment to be purchased October, 2000

Contact:

Actions Necessary for Implementation: Purchase of equipment that uses hot water (above 160 degrees F) to kill unwanted plant species by melting the waxy outer protective coating of their leaves.  Applying hot water will not only kill, or cook the plant, but can also eliminate any seed production down to 2 inches in the soil.

Anticipated Environmental Sustainability Benefits: Significantly reduces the use of herbicides.  This procedure could also be used at training sites to replace chemical removal of unwanted vegetation, provide low-toxic soil sterilization, supplement prescribed burning and minimize soil erosion due to plowing practices.
