Environmental Sustainability Report - 2000

The NC Department of Health and Human Services serves the 7 million North Carolinians, fostering self-reliance and protecting the vulnerable. We work in local offices, schools and hospitals, building a stronger North Carolina by strengthening our citizens in all 100 counties.  We safeguard the public health. We protect children and ensure child care is safe.  We help low income families with child insurance and public assistance and help older adults remain independent and work to ensure nursing home facilities are safe.  We help children and adults with disabities.

On any given day in North Carolina, DHHS is at work when...

  • Public health nurses immunize children to protect them from disease.
  • Social workers find loving families for children who need foster care or adoption.
  • Case workers help people find their way to self-sufficiency.
  • Rehabilitation specialists help the disabled learn everyday skills so they can live life to the fullest.
  • Health professionals bring services to families without access to health care in rural and urban communities.
  • Advisors help families understand their options for home-based and community care for older relatives.
  • Teachers educate children who are deaf or blind to prepare them for the working world.
  • Licensing specialists oversee the safety and proper management of child care centers, emergency medical services, hospitals, nursing homes or other health facilities.
  • Child support agents track down deadbeat parents and make them take responsibility for their children and pay child support.
