Horror. This week the Treasury of Spain made public a document where they indicated their largest debtors. However, the surprise was taken by fans of the FC Barcelona, as they came across the name of a former champion and club legend: Samuel Eto’o. The published file, which is called “List of debtors”, includes thousands of individuals and companies that owe more than 600,000 euros to the Spanish treasury, a lower threshold than in previous years, which exceeded one million. Of course, the 2021 list includes more names, 7,200, for 3,400 in 2020.
The 40-year-old former attacker, who played from 2004 to 2009 in the Blaugrana team, owes 981,598.19 euros to the treasury (that is, USD 1,111,807.19). It should be noted that he had previously had conflicts over the payment of taxes, to such an extent that in 2016, the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office requested a total of ten years in prison for him and the payment of 18 million euros, accusing him of not having paid 3 , 9 million euros for his image rights during his time at the Camp Nou.
After being contacted by the AFP, the tax administration revealed that it is not authorized to give more information to the media, in particular about the origin of the Cameroonian debt. In addition, he could not specify if Eto’o appeared for the first time on the list, whose criteria were modified this year.
As we well know, the former scorer passed through Barcelona between 2004 and 2009, a stage where he won seven titles, including two Champions League. However, in Spain he also had brief steps for Real Madrid, Leganés, Espanyol and Mallorca, a club with which he won a Copa del Rey. Later, he stood out at Inter Milan, where he returned to conquer Europe, and in other teams such as Chelsea, Antalyaspor in Turkey and Sampdoria in Italy.
They are not saved either
Among the other recognized figures that appear on the list are Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, who owes 1.4 million euros (USD 1.58 million) and footballer Dani Alves, with 1 million euros (USD 1 ,3 millions). It is necessary to mention that they already appeared in the document that was published in junior this year.
And as if that were not enough, Twitter also appears in the file of large defaulters 2021 with a debt of 800,795.01 euros. The tax authorities have decided not to reveal any further details on this matter.
Finally, in September 2020, the Brazilian footballer Neymar, star of PSG, formerly at FC Barcelona, became the largest defaulter of the Spanish treasury, with a debt of more than 34 million euros. The Treasury did not specify what the debt consisted of and if it was linked to his signing by the Catalans in 2013.
