The United Kingdom and Ireland will launch a joint bid to host the 2028 European Championship, while ruling out hosting the World Cup in 2030, their federations announced today. This news leaves Spain Y Portugal as Europe’s only bid to host the World Cup in eight years’ time, and secure the support of all 55 UEFA associations.
The British federations (from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) and the Irish one released an official statement with this announcement, which confirms the intention advanced in recent weeks by the sports officials of both countries.
“Hosting a UEFA European Championship offers a World Cup-like return on investment, with the European tournament carrying much lower cost and the potential for benefits to be achieved sooner”, the note stated.
Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA, had asked the 55 European federations that there be only one candidacy for the World Cup organizations and the efforts made by Luis Rubiales and Fernando Gomes, presidents of the Spanish and Portuguese Federation respectively, have given its fruit.
In addition to the European support, the Arab federations have also given their approval to the Spanish-Portuguese bid thanks to the presence of the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia.
Both the heads of state and the governments of Spain and Portugal have shown their absolute support for the project from the beginning and see it as a great opportunity for both countries, both economically and in sporting and social terms.
To date, there is no other candidacy that has confirmed its presence in the race to organize the 2030 World Cup. Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay announced their intention, in addition to another Asian and another African, but none of them has made their candidacy official for a decision to be made official in a year.
