HOW IS THE KISS SEEN IN THE MOVIE “LIGHTYEAR”?
One of the characters that will populate this new world is Hawthorne, voiced by Uzo Aduba, who is in a same-sex relationship. The kiss was previously removed in a move that employees revealed in a press release is part of a long history of Disney censoring Pixar’s efforts to include LGBTQ+ content.
The censored scene will rejoin the film, but not much else is known about the scene at this time, considering the film still hits theaters June 16-17. However, the protagonists have spoken about it.
The director’s words
Director Angus Maclane told EW that he’s “glad there was so much support” for the scene, but said he “didn’t realize how significant” the moment would be. “It’s not new, personally,” he explained. “First, it was like, ‘This is something we need for our movie,’” he revealed.
How is the kiss?
According to the aforementioned medium, on one of Buzz’s trips, he meets his best friend, Starfleet Commander Alisha Hawthorne. She marries and raises a family with a member of the science team, Kiko. And in one part of the story, she shows an older Alisha sharing a kiss with Kiko, as she celebrates her son’s graduation.
“Narratively, I never wanted Alisha to be Buzz’s love interest. because it doesn’t help their relationship”Maclane explained, later assuring that he didn’t want the film to feel like it was setting up what he called “a second chance relationship” with Izzy (Keke Palmer), her best friend’s granddaughter who ends up helping the main character in the future. “Alisha’s relationship with Kiko was a way of at least implying that this was not part of their relationship”he highlighted.
Other winks about Alisha and Kiko’s relationship
In fact, the film has other clear nods to Alisha and Kiko’s love story, including her telling Buzz that she married a woman; but the show of affection and other moments were not included due to lack of time. And although the kiss could be added in the final cut, there were other elements that were left out.
“There used to be more with Alisha and Kiko where we actually saw Kiko die and Buzz comfort Alisha.”Maclane revealed. “It was great to see more of their relationship, but it undermined the next scene. So it was always, how do we get the emotion out of the scene and then go to the next scene?.
WHAT DID CHRIS EVANS SAY ABOUT THE KISS?
During a conversation with Variety, Chris Evans commented on Disney’s reinstatement of the same-sex kiss from “Lightyear”. The star approved of the studio restoring the moment, but also expressed hope that we would see better representation in the future and reach a point where these types of scenes are no longer news.
“I mean, it’s great. As cool as it is, and you know, I’ve been asked the question several times, it’s nice and wonderful. It makes me happy. It’s hard not to be a little frustrated that it even has to be a topic of discussion, that this kind of ‘news’ is. The goal is that we can get to a point where it’s the norm and this doesn’t have to be uncharted territory.that in the end that’s how it is “said the actor who gives life to one of Andy’s favorite toys.
“That representation across the board is how we make movies, it’s an honor to be a part of something that’s taking those steps, but the goal is to look back at this moment and just be amazed that it took us this long to get there.” ”he remarked.
