James Gunndirector of superhero movie hits like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, revealed the reasons behind the successes of superhero movies from Marvel in an interview he gave for the portal Deadline.
According to Gunn, who is also behind the successful series Peacemaker, he indicated that in his opinion, visual effects supported by technology have made the success of superhero movies today a reality.
“A lot of modern movies exist today simply for the visual effects. People always ask me why Marvel Studios movies are so popular today when they weren’t in the past.”

“From my point of view, I think one hundred percent of that reason is the visual effects. They have allowed us to get to the place where we can make it believable, for example, that a metal-coated guy is flying through the sky,” she added.
In that sense, the director also referred to the criticized “excess of CGI” in superhero movies, something that has always been a point of debate among film connoisseurs.
“Actually, it’s what works best for each situation. Often, it is usually CGI. There are certain things you can’t do with practical effects, but sometimes you need them. Then, on many other occasions, it is something in between. I love playing there, because people can get a little lazy with the CGI,” Gunn said.
“They just look at it and say, ‘We’ll figure it out later.’ And then you have to make things up. But when you plan everything, you can put them together that way. We’ve done a lot of that,” she said.
